Passage

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow based on understanding of the passage.

Mountain areas have become popular destinations for activity based tourism and mountain systems worldwide are being used increasingly for recreational and adventure activities. The development of mountain tourism requires the construction of hotels, apartments, and associated infrastructures placing increased pressure on land resources and animal habitats. The removal of trees to create ski runs, besides resulting in a loss of habitat for wildlife, also means that rainfall falling on the mountain slopes is not absorbed in the same quantity as before. The removal of trees causes a loss of cohesion and stabilization of the soil by the tree roots and subsequently the mountain slope is more prone to slippage. The effects of these landslides can be quite dramatic, sometimes involving the loss of human life. The avalanches of mud that swept down mountain sides in northern Italy and Southern Switzerland, in which 60 people died, 7,000 were made homeless and 50 towns, villages and holiday centres were wrecked. The cause of these landslides was attributed to the removal of mountainside forests for ski development.
