Introduction to Demography

It is the systematic study of the size along with the distribution and composition of human population.

Changes result from fertility, mortality, and migration (Poston and Bouvier, 2010).

Demography term has been derived from two Greek words:

  • ‘demos’ means population
  • ‘graphia’ means writing description

Belgian statistician Achille Guillard was the first to coin the term Demography in 1855.
