Pollution: Radioactive Pollution, Half-Life, Sources of Radioactive Pollution, Types of Radioactive Waste
Radioactive Pollution
Radioactive elements decay to gain molecular stability this is known as radioactivity. When an element decays, it emits energy and small sub-atomic particles. This process is repeated, until molecular stability is reached.
Half-Life
It is time taken for decay of half of the atoms of a radioactive substance. The longer the half-life the greater the time required to fully decompose the radioactive waste.
There are commonly three types of radiation:
- Alpha particles: These can be blocked by paperβ¦

Radioactive Pollution
Effects of Radioactive Pollution
Different organisms and tissue types show different sensitivity to the radiations.
- Plants at the high altitudes have a multiple set of chromosomes (called polyploidy) . This helps in preventing mutations even in presence of radiations.
- Damage also depends on cell type, rapidly dividing cells like skin cells, intestinal cells, bone marrow, and gonads are more easily damaged. On the other hand, cells, which divide infrequently like bone, muscle, and nervous cells are not easily damaged due to raβ¦
