Higher Education in India: UGC

University Grants Commission (UGC) coordinates, determines, and maintains higher education standards in India. It is also responsible for release of grants. Professional councils affiliated with UGC recognize courses, promote professional institutions, and provide grants to undergraduate programs. These councils also grant various student awards. Section 12 of UGC Act provides that UGC in consultation with concerned universities, take all such steps as it may see fit for promotion and coordination of higher education. It is also responsible for maintaining high standards in teaching, examination, and research.
