Explanation

  • The Gujral Doctrine is a set of five principles to guide the conduct of foreign relations with India՚s immediate neighbors, notably Pakistan, as spelt out by Inder Kumar Gujral. This was the part of United Front Government՚s neighborhood policy which stood on five basic principles: First, with the neighbors like Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka, India does not ask for reciprocity but gives all that it can in good faith and trust.
  • Secondly, no South Asian country will allow its territory to be used against the interest of another country of the region. Thirdly, none will interfere in the internal affairs of another. Fourthly, all South Asian countries must respect each other՚s territorial integrity and sovereignty. And finally, they will settle all their disputes through peaceful bilateral negotiations.
  • P. V. Narashima Rao implemented ‘Look East’ foreign policy. The Vajpayee government improved India՚s ties with the People՚s Republic of China, boosting trade and seeking the resolution of territorial disputes through dialogue. India also established strategic and military cooperation with Israel. During Rajiv Gandhi՚s tenure despite initial disturbances, Indo-US relations interchanged in almost every field — political, economic, cultural and social. The economic ties remained particularly strong. He prioritized India՚s policy towards his neighbors particularly Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
