Defeat of Panhala

  • Jai Singh, with Shivaji՚s support, made a surprise attack on Bijapur but he failed to succeed in his task as Bijapur made wonderful preparations for his protection. Bijapur՚s army devastated a vast area around the fort, so that the enemy՚s army could not get food grains. In the absence of food and fodder, on 15th January 1666, Jai Singh was forced to retreat.

Physical Features of Maharashtra

  • Maharashtra՚s geographical condition greatly helped Shivaji become a great celebrity and important political and military figure. It is a hilly country, and therefore it has been guarded by nature.
  • It provided the summits of hills with a large number of impregnable forts. Such forts strengthened the Marathas from both a physical and a strategic viewpoint. Shivaji used and organized all the geographical resources into a compact force.
