Early Miniature
- In the 9th to 11th centuries, the miniature art developed in eastern and western India almost as a reaction to large-scale wall painting. Miniature drawings for books or records on perishable material such as palm leaves, ink, and fabric were executed on a very small scale.
- In the East, the Bengal Pala School ( 9th - 12th century) developed illustrations on palm leaf and paper manuscripts and on their wooden covers. Vajrayana Buddhism influences almost all of those illuminations. Sinuous curves, soft tones, and plain designs are typical of the painting.
