Rock Cut Architecture (Barabar Caves and Nagarjuni Hills Caves)

  • The rise of rock-cut architecture took place in Mauryan period. The Barabar and Nagarjuni hills to the north of Bodh Gaya contains several caves that were inhabited by ascetics in ancient times. Three caves in the Barabar have dedicative inscriptions of Ashoka, and three in Nagarjuni hills have inscriptions of his son Dasaratha. The caves are plain and have highly polished interiors.
