Shatterbelt Theory

Cohen in 1950 gave the Shatterbelt theory. He explained modified pivot area concept. Cohen equated Rimland (given by Spykman) to the Inner Crescent (given by Mackinder) . This inner crescent is known as Shatterbelt, which has been the center for conflicts mainly due to diplomacy in oil and Middle East. His model shows Japan, the U. S. , and the European Community as the current first-order states for the maritime realm and China and the Soviet Union as the first-order countries for the continental realm. Cohen gave 3 regions:
