Currents: Coriolis Effect, Characteristics of Ocean Current
Continuous and directed ocean water movement generated by forces, which act on this mean flow like waves, wind, Coriolis force, temperature, salinity, and tides, is called ocean currents. Direction and strength of current is influenced by depth contours, coastline configurations, and interaction with other currents.
Coriolis Effect
Like the winds, Coriolis Effect also affects ocean currents, by changing their direction. The current deflects to right in Northern Hemisphere resulting in a clockwise flow. In South…

Currents: Causes of Ocean Currents, Effects of Ocean Currents
Causes of Ocean Currents
Major causes of ocean currents are:
- Prevailing Winds: Winds pushing against water cause ocean currents. Strong winds, prevailing for longer duration cause stronger currents.
- Difference in Salinity and Temperature: Heavy water sinks at poles and flows towards equator through THC. Ocean surface currents balance this movement. Light upper layer of water is forced to move towards the poles where it is cooled.
- Earth՚s Rotation: Earth՚s rotation produces Coriolis force, which plays an important role in formation of gyres.
