- Marine fisheries play a significant role in Indian economy and provide livelihood to about 3.5 million coastal rural folk living in 3200 marine fishing villages.
- There are 1896 traditional fish landing centers, 33 minor fishing harbors, and 6 major fishing harbors which serve as bases for about 2,08, 000 traditional non-motorized craft, 55,000 small scale beach-landing craft fitted with outboard motors, 51,250 mechanized craft (mainly bottom trawlers and purse-seiners) , and 180 deep sea fishing vessels (out of which around 80 are in operation) .
