The first few five year plans give importance to revive the agricultural production. Such plans give emphasis to the distribution of land to all the poor farmers and avoid the intermediaries in the production and sale of the produces on the market.

Millets: Introduction, Production, Trade and Exports

Millets are coarse grains that are traditionally grown and consumed in the Indian subcontinent for over 5000 years. China is said to have used millets for over 4,000 years. It is widely available in Chinese stores across the United States.

They have high nutritional value and are rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fibres. Unlike other cereals, millets require little water and ground fertility. The sheer affordability of millets also tags them as “poor man՚s food grain” . The world is now noticing millets for their enormous potential.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced 2023 to be the ‘Year of the Millets’ under India՚s recommendation.
