Fronts: Introduction, Locating Front on Map

Edit

Introduction

Fronts are sloping boundaries having two opposing distinct air masses with contrasting characteristics like temperature, humidity, density, pressure, and wind direction. Frontal surface separates two air masses and lies next to warmer air. Frontal zone is vast transitional zone between two converging air masses, which depicts discontinuity zone of opposing contrasting air masses. Frontal zone is slightly inclined to ground surface. Fronts vary from each other in location, types, and real extent. …

Fronts: Characteristics of Fronts, Creation and Destruction of Fronts

Edit

Characteristics of Fronts

  • Slope: Slope is an important characteristic of front. The frontal slope depends on the latitude of the front, the wind speed, and the temperature difference between the air masses. Since cold air tends to under run warm air, if the slope is steep, lifting will be intense with larger vertical motion of the warm air resulting in more intense weather. Factors favoring a steep slope are a large wind velocity difference between air masses, small temperature difference, and high latitude.
  • Turbulence: Turbulence determines the frontal intensity. A front may be intense in terms of discontinuity of density acr…
