Soil Characteristics: Soil Depth
Soil Depth
Depth of a soil is important for both agricultural crop selection and non-agricultural uses:
- Deeply rooted plants such as trees require deep soils for best growth.
- Coarse gravel and sand layers obstruct root penetration and can endure high water tables.
- Houses having basements or septic tanks should be made on deep, well-drained soils.
Causes of Shallow Depth
Depth of a soil can be shallow because
- Soil formation made only a thin layer of soil on very hard or resistant parent material.
- Erosion reduced the thickness of a once-deep soil.
- Root-…

Soil Characteristics: Acidity
Acidity
Degree of acidity of alkalinity (basic nature) of soil is represented by its pH (potential of hydrogen) . Acidic soils have greater availability of hydrogen ions, affecting cation exchange.
PH
pH is a numeric scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. pH is decreased by addition of acid to a solution, which increases the concentration of hydrogen ions. pH is not same as acidity, it is the scale on which acidity is expressed.
Classification of Soil
Soil having
- is acidic
- is neutral
