Edit

Karl P. Schmidt Distribution

Wallace՚s distribution was later modified by Karl P. Schmidt in the year 1954. According to Schmidt՚s modified scheme, the world can be divided into three realms: Arctogaean, Neogean kingdom (South America) and Notogean kingdom (Australasia) . These realms consist of regions and sub-regions given in following table along with corresponding regions of classical Wallace System.

Kuschel՚s Classification

In 1964, he explained the geographical distribution of plant and animal taxa from the southern continents.

  • His primary focus was on terrestrial animals.
  • Based on phylogenetic relationships of several taxa and possibility of Antarctica being a former land bridge, he proposed an ‘Austral region’ , which included Patagonian, South African and Australian subregions.

Smith՚s Classification

It was based on numerical analysis of the mammal families of the world. It Included 4 regions and 10 subregions: Holarctic region (Nearctic and Palearctic subregions) , Latin A…
