  • Horror is a genre of speculative literature which intends to arouse fear, terror, or disgust in the reader. Although horror literature typically contains supernatural elements it can also be non-supernatural. This kind of literature seeks to create an atmosphere of eerie suspense. Often, the “monster” of the horror story is an embodiment of the fears and anxieties of contemporary society. The horror genre has its roots in ancient folklore and religious traditions which were concerned with questions regarding death and the afterlife. Stories about witches, werewolves, vampires etc. emerged from such traditions.
