Water Soluble Vitamins

Vitamin B- complex are a group of water soluble vitamins which are mostly co-enzymes.

Common sources of vitamin B-complex; germinating seeds are rich source, wheat germs, beans, pulses, lentils, liver, meat, yeast they are mostly synthesized by intestinal bacteria.

Vitamin B1 (thiamine) ; also called anti beri-beri substance or antineuritic vitamin.

It was extracted by Funk from rice barn. It was isolated in pure form in 1926. Willians (1930) determined its structure. Jansen (1949) obtained it in crystalline form.

  • Sources; is present in meat, fish, liver, eggs, yeast, milk, cereals, pulses, grains, nuts, fruits, germ of cereals.
  • Daily requirement; is 1 to 1.5 mg.
