Investment Banking

Edit

An investment bank is a financial intermediary that provides several financial and corporate services like fund mobilization, business advice, underwriting etc. , to corporate, individuals and to government. Basically, investment banking is provided by dedicated banking entities (private) . Investment banks will have tremendous and sophisticated knowledge about the business domain and have skills in fund mobilization activities.

The idea and functioning of investment banks changes slightly from one country to another. In several countries including in India, investment banking is done by entities classified as merchant banks. From the functional side, merchant banks deal only with corporate fund mobilization activities like IPO underwriting. But the investment bank does more functions and provides some services to the general public as well. Hence, both merchant banking and investment banking are used interchangeably.
