Passage

Nestled among the historic seaport buildings of Rockland, Maine, the nine-room Captain Lindsey House, built in 1837, is one of Rockland՚s first inns. The house has served as the offices of the water company, a rooming house, and now an inn. At one time, traveling theatres were popular and actors went from town to town performing; many that came through Rockland stayed at the Captain Lindsey, and some of their gaiety can still be felt here.

The house is full of antiques, which tend to attract the spirit energy of the object՚s previous owners. The staff and owners will tell you right off the bat that the house has several unseen, permanent guests. Walking into the home, you can feel the energy all over and can be assured of having a hauntingly good time.

If you stay in one of the first-floor rooms, you can hear people walking around and furniture being moved when no one is upstairs at all. Each room seems to have its own story. In a few of the rooms, you՚ll first see the beds are made neatly, covers smooth, but if you go back into the room later, a handprint can be seen on one of the beds, or on other beds there are impressions as if someone had been sitting on it. A cabinet in the sitting room will show a woman՚s face. Faint voices have been heard, and pictures reveal many orbs in all parts of the house. You could say history is still alive at the Captain Lindsey House.

Passage

The Family Planning as an official programme was launched with much fanfare in 1952. The government is still trying to educate the people. All government agencies and institutions mobilized all their resources to attain the goal of planned families. The propaganda machinery was geared up with the help of public media. The people were reminded of the advantages of small families, of healthy and happy children and of the need for eradicating the age-old poverty. The parents were persuaded to go in for sterilization after the births of two children, for the contraceptive were not always found to be safe and full-proof. Many parents, especially the educated, came forward to see things in the new light and were amenable to persuasion. However, many others resisted, at places quite violently, and refused to see reason. The government was very serious about making the programme a success. The state governments also came forward to help the centre in its bid to achieve success. Cheap contraceptives were distributed in even the remotest villages, sex education was popularized, vasectomy operations were conducted and abortion was legalized. (Moderate)
