Composition, Structure and Function of Polysaccharide
Polysaccharides are the largest component of biomass. It is estimated that more than 90% of the carbohydrate mass in nature is in the form of polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are polymers of monosaccharides which are linked together by Glycosidic bonds. Polysaccharides are also called as Glycan (Gly – Sugar, an- polymer)

Functions of Polysaccharides Storage and Polysaccharide
Polysaccharides being polymers of carbohydrates linked together through glycosidic bonds posses following characteristics.
- They are high molecular weight carbohydrates.
- Presence of multiple hydrogen bonds, made them hydrophobic in nature.
- Hydrophobic nature of them makes them non-soluble in water
- Not sweet in taste
- They don՚t form crystalline structure.
- Osmotically inactive
Being comparatively larger macromolecules Polysaccharides are extremely important in organisms for energy storage and for framing structural integrity.
- Storage polysaccharide: Polysaccharide that act as food reservoir and stores energy in living organisms. Storage polysaccharides include st…
