  • Lysosomes are roughly spherical bodies enclosed by a single membrane of lipoprotein found in the cytoplasm of animal cells. The inner space or vacuole contains dense, granular, and homogenous material. They develop in a gradual way by the addition of the hydrolytic enzymes to late endosomes from the Golgi complex. The name derived from the Greek words lysis to separate and soma body. They are referred as suicide bag or suicide sacs. Christian de Duve discovered this organelle in 1960. The size of this organelle varies from 0.1 – 1.2 µm.
