Since 1947 and creation of Pakistan, India has faced numerous episodes of insurgent movements and terrorism from Islamic militants. According to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2016, India was ranked 7th most impacted nation. India recorded 289 terrorism-related deaths in 797 attacks in 2015. However, 80% attacks in 2015 were non-lethal. India experienced 7% of all terrorist attacks worldwide, the fourth highest after Iraq (20%) , Afghanistan (14%) , and Pakistan (8%) .
