Ancient Towns
- These are more than 2000 years old with long history of existence.
- These towns developed as religious and cultural centers.
- Important examples include Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayag, Pataliputra, and Madurai.
Medieval Towns
- These emerged in medieval period as headquarters of kingdoms.
- Important examples include Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, and Agra.
Modern Towns
- Pre-Independence Towns: These were developed by British and other European rulers. They were port towns like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Surat, Goa, and Puducherry along with hill stations and summer resorts like Shimla.
