Cyclonic Activity in Indian Ocean: Yearly Variation in Cyclonic Activity

Edit

Yearly Variation in Cyclonic Activity

Only post-monsoon and pre-monsoon periods are conducive for cyclone formation.

Monsoon Season

Cyclones usually do not form during monsoon season because of following reasons:

  • Atmospheric parameters like low-level relative vorticity, mid-tropospheric relative humidity, and vertical wind shear are not conducive for cyclone formation.
  • During monsoon, there is strong zonal (latitudinal) wind in the form of a low level Somali Jet that is not conducive for cyclone formation as the vertical shear between lower and upper troposphere is higher. Wind shear is the difference in speeds across layers of troposphere. Wind shea…

Cyclonic Activity in Indian Ocean: Comparison of Cyclonic Activity and Devastation between Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea

Edit

Comparison of Cyclonic Activity and Devastation between Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea

The north Indian Ocean accounts for 7% of global tropical cyclones.

High Cyclogenesis Potential of Bay of Bengal

During pre-monsoon and post-monsoon in the North Indian Ocean, more cyclones form in the Bay of Bengal compared with the Arabian Sea. It is estimated that number of cyclones in Bay of Bengal is about four times higher. This difference between the Bay of Bengal and Ara…
