  • Establishment of Royal Geographical Society in 1830 marked the beginning of geographical thought in England. The pre 1830 works of Brita. in are Mary Somerville՚s Physical Geography (1848) and Francis Galton՚s Weather Map (1861) .
  • The society worked on the development of geography as a discipline by promoting research, preparation of maps, books and journals.
  • It was Mackinder who formally started British geographical thought at School of Geography in Oxford University in 1887.
