According to Smith (1965) the study of historical geography has embraced four distinct approaches:

  • The operation of the geographical factor in history: Dr. Jared Diamond in his book “Guns, Germs, and Steel” (1997) , concluded that differences in the success of civilizations arise primarily from environmental factors- from the influence of geography. He argues that more than genetics, philosophy, religion, or other internal factors, geography determines human agency, and ultimately the development of human society.
