Introduction
First textile mill was established in 1854 in Mumbai by C. N. Dewar. Fast growth of cotton textile industry occurred in 1870 with increasing demand of Indian goods in the wake of American Civil War. Before First World War, number of Indian textile mills rose to 271. Demand for cloth during Second World War led to further progress of the textile industry. Industry however suffered setback in 1947 as good quality cotton growing area went to Pakistan. Consequently, India had to import cotton from African countries.
