Deforestation: Extent of Deforestation
Forests are being cleared for fuel, industry and other purposes. Such forest clearing leads to depletion of forest cover and is known as deforestation. Average length of time for a new tree to mature is around 50 years. Therefore, afforestation takes a long time. For example, forests are cleared in Europe for charcoal, paper industries, for wood, and shipbuilding industry. In China, they are cleared for agriculture. In North America for wood, paper industry, agriculture, and mechanization. India huge swaths of forests were cleared for agriculture and grazing.
