Forests are being cleared for fuel, industry and other purposes. Such forest clearing leads to depletion of forest cover and is known as deforestation. Average length of time for a new tree to mature is around 50 years. Therefore, afforestation takes a long time. For example, forests are cleared in Europe for charcoal, paper industries, for wood, and shipbuilding industry. In China, they are cleared for agriculture.
