This classification was given in 1952 by Tribal Welfare Committee constituted by the Indian Conference of Social Work:

  • Tribal Communities: Tribes confined within the forests with distinctive life pattern are known as “Tribal Communities.”
  • Semi Tribal Communities: These tribes are settled in rural areas and practice agriculture.
  • Acculturated Tribal Communities: These tribes have migrated to urban and rural areas, are engaged in industrial activities, and have adopted culture of the people of the migrated area.

Major Tribes

There are 7 major tribes and 45 minor tribes in India. Some important tribes are:

  • Gonds: It is the largest tribe in India. They reside in Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh (Bastar, Surguja, Chhindwara, and Mandla) , Andhra Pradesh (Adilabad, Karim Nagar, and Warangal) , Maharashtra (Chanda, Yavatmal districts) . They mainly speak Gondi language and have agro forest economy. They practice basic agriculture, forest product collection, cattle rearing, hunting, and fishing.
