Distributional pattern of railway network depends on the terrain, topography, density of population, and productivity of the area. The last two in turn depend on the available minerals, industrialization, fertility of land, and climatic conditions. Density of railways is significantly high in Northern Plains of India with high population density and high production, while in hilly states their density is very low. Table below shows length of railways in major states.

  • Mission Raftar: The mission envisages a target of doubling of average speed of freight trains and increasing the average speed of all non-suburban passenger trains by 25 kmph in the next 5 years.
  • Bullet Train: Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Bullet Train Project aims to develop high-speed track covering the 508 kilometers between Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Ahmedabad (Gujarat) . Bullet train will cover this distance in about 2 hours. Bullet trains have operating speeds over 320 kmph and maximum speed of 350 kmph.
