Optimum Population: Mathematical Concept- Factors Affecting Optimum Population, Marginal Product of Labor

Edit

Mathematical Concept

Given above assumptions, optimum population is one which provides maximum GDP per head as shown in the figure.

Idea is to consider an economy in a stationary state, where aggregate consumption is constant over time. Stocks of capital are assumed to be given and variable to be controlled is the size of the population. Output, as a function of population is taken so that the associated average product curve is bell shaped.

Point N represents optimum population where per capita output is maximum. It happens because increasing labor up…

Optimum Population: Limitations of Optimal Population, Optimum Population vs. Malthusian Theory

Edit

Limitations of Optimal Population

  • No evidence of optimum population level has been found in any country.
  • It assumes that per capita income is uniform across entire nation and all sections of society.
  • Human population can in long run adopt to needs of a larger population.
  • It is not considered as useful as calculations are plagued with assumptions and unverifiable predictions.
  • It is impossible to determine optimum population level.
  • It is not ideal …
