Progress and Phases of Indian Monsoons: Onset of the Monsoon
Monsoon in India is caused due to varied response of a tropical atmosphere to heating from the lower boundary, which can be either:
- A heat low type circulation, with ascent over the zone of maximum heating restricted to the lowest 2 - 3 km.
- Ascent throughout the troposphere resulting in ITCZ type of circulation.
The variation between these two types of responses causes several phenomenon:
- Before the onset of the monsoon, the Indian monsoon zone is characterized by the presence of a heat low.
- At the end of the onset phase, a tropical convergence zone is established over the region. This ITCZ type of ascent is responsible for monsoon.
- However, such a convective circul…
