Geomorphic Cycles: Penck՚s Cycle of Erosion

Edit

Penck՚s Cycle of Erosion

Penck criticized Davis for assumption of short-lived rapid uplift and three-staged concept, and developed a time independent model.

Background of Penck՚s Cycle

  • Simultaneous Upliftment and Erosion: Contrary to the concept of W. M. Davis, that the landscape is function of structure, process, and stage (time) , Walther Penck postulated that, geomorphic forms are an expression of the phase and rate of uplift in relation to rate of degradation. Thus according to Penck, shape of landforms is a function of ratio of velocity of endogenous movement to intensity of erosion.
  • Slope Replacement: He explained that slope replacement means original steep slopes being replaced by lower angle slopes, which exte…

Geomorphic Cycles: King՚s Cycle of Erosion (Cycle of Pediplanation)

Edit

King՚s Cycle of Erosion (Cycle of Pediplanation)

King rejected ideas of Davis and applied cycle of erosion to clarification of landscape of South Africa. King replaced ‘normal’ cycle of erosion of Davis based on humid temperate climates with his own based on subtropical climates.

Key Aspects of King՚s Cycle

  • It was devised to account for inselberg, escarpment, or pediment la…
