Pressure: Measuring Atmospheric Pressure
Atmospheric pressure is the force per unit area exerted against any surface by air weight above that surface in earth՚s atmosphere. In most cases, atmospheric pressure is close to hydrostatic pressure caused by weight of air above the measurement point. Low-pressure areas have less atmospheric mass above their position. As height increases, there is less overlying atmospheric mass. Thus, pressure reduces with increasing height.
