Distribution of Terrestrial Plants (Floristic Kingdoms) : Takhtajan Classification

Edit

Takhtajan Classification

In 1986, he gave biogeographical phytoregionalisation of the world.

  • He laid down six kingdoms: Holarctic, Paleotropical, Neotropical, Cape, Australian, and Antarctic (including Patagonia and New Zealand) and 35 regions.
  • He did not provide figures for the total number of families or genera in the different kingdoms.

While Newbigin did not include separate Cape Kingdom of South Africa, Takhtajan did. He justified it by giving several reasons.

Reasons for Separate Cape Kingdom

  • Despite occupying less than 0.5% of the area of Africa, it is home to nearly 20% of the continent՚s flora.
  • Fynbos vegetation is unique to the Cape Floral Region.

Distribution of Terrestrial Plants (Floristic Kingdoms) : Udvardy՚s Classification, Classification of Plants Based on Environmental Conditions

Edit

Udvardy՚s Classification

He gave this classification in 1975. His classification was predominantly based on vegetational components.

It was considered as the first unified system that classified natural ecosystems into biogeographical realms.

He recognized 8 biogeographic kingdoms, including Nearctic, Palearctic, Neotropical, Africotropical, Indomalayan, Oceania, Australian, and Antarctic. He grouped southern Chile, New Zealand, and Tasmania into the Antarctic kingdom, but kept Australia and South Africa independent of it.
