INSAT (Indian National Satellite System)
  • It is a series of multipurpose geostationary satellites launched by ISRO to satisfy India՚s need for telecom and broadcasting, meteorology, and search and rescue.
  • Program was commissioned in 1983.
  • It is Asia-Pacific՚s largest domestic communication system.
  • It is a joint venture of Department of Telecommunications, India Meteorological Department, Department of Space, All India Radio, and Doordarshan.
  • Satellites include INSAT-2E, INSAT-3A, INSAT-3B, INSAT-3C, INSAT-3E, INSAT-4A, INSAT-4B, INSAT-4CR, GSAT-8 or INSAT-4G, GSAT-12, GSAT-10, GSAT-16, INSAT-3DR.
  • Of the 24 satellites launched in the course of the INSAT program, 11 are still in operation.
  • INSAT-3DR is a weather satellite using a 6-channel imager and a 19-channel sounder. It was launched on 9th September 2016 by the GSLV Mk II F05.
