  • Mumbai: Mumbai is largest and most important seaport along the western coast of India. It was developed by British in 1672 as substitute to Surat seaport. It has a natural harbor about 12 m in depth. It handles 12 % of total traffic by all ports with free trade zone. Mumbai port handles 24 % oil traffic, 25 % general cargo, and 36 % marine container traffic of Indian ports.

Postal System

In India, modern postal system came into existence in 2nd half of the 18th century.

  • Lord Clive established modern postal system in 1766.
  • Warren Hastings developed it further in 1774 when he established Calcutta General Post Office (GPO) under Post Master General.
  • In Bombay Presidency, GPO came into existence in 1786.
  • In Madras Presidency, GPO came into existence in 1793.
  • Act of 1873, was first attempt to regulate the post office on a uniform basis by uniting post office organizations in three presidencies into one all India service.
