National Food Security Act in India

  • The law legislated in 2013 aims to provide 1.2 billion people with food security through Targeted Public Distribution System, i.e.. , TPDS. This comprises 75 % of rural and 50 % of urban poor. As per this Act, the beneficiaries of Public Distribution System can acquire rice at ₹ 3 per kg and wheat ₹ 2 per kg. The Act also envisages the Nutrition and Health Care of mothers and children. Antyodaya Anna Yojana aimed at the poorest of the poor are given Kilos of ration every month.
  • Mid-day Meals: this programme provides free lunch to the students of government institutions to improve the nutritional status of the children.
