Industrial unrest describes activities undertaken by workforce when they protest against pay or employment conditions. This disturbed state sometimes leads to insurgency. Actions may include strikes, sit-ins, go-slows, or work-to-rule. Historically, riots also took place, such as action taken by the Luddites during the Industrial Revolution.

Between 2003 and 2014, the number of strikes and lockouts has fallen by nearly three-fourth. In 2003, Indian industries saw 552 strikes and lockouts, but in 2014, the number fell to 143.

Even internationally, industrial unrests including strikes and lockouts in 1992 - 2007 were much lower than 1977 - 1992. They were reduced by 80 % in…
