According to FAO, in India, about 23.0 % or about 68,434, 000 ha of land is forested. Of this 14.9 % (10,211, 000 ha) is classified as primary forest, the most bio diverse and carbon-dense form of forest. India has 10,211, 000 ha of planted forest. Deforestation in India has been a long process that goes back to British period. Refer “Deforestation” in “Biogeography” in “Physical Geography” .
