A Brief Introduction
- Samuel Barclay Beckett was born in the year 1906 and died in 1989. He was an Irish novelist, poet and playwright who wrote in English and French.
- He met James Joyce, the famous Irish writer and their association had a profound impact on his literary career.
- His first critical essay, “Dante … Bruno. Vico … Joyce” published in 1929 justified Joyce՚s unique literary style.
- His admiration for certain aspects of Joyce՚s style is reflected in his works.
- Waiting for Godot is his first and most famous play originally written in French as En Attendant Godot; it was first staged in a small theatre in Paris in 1953. Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969.
