Multicast, Multicast Routing, PIM: Protocol Independent Multicast, PIM - Dense Mode (PIM-DM) , PIM - Sparse Mode (PIM-SM)
Edit
Multicast Routing
- Multicast routing is all about finding a common path to reach all the destinations that belong to the group.
- While unicast routing focuses on finding the least-cost path between source and destination, multicast routing is about finding a tree (or trees) connecting routers having local multicast group members.
- The same tree may be shared by all group members or we could have a specific tree for each source.
- The DVMRP protocol we discussed in the previous module, uses the latter approach.
- The PIM protocol which we are no…

Inter-Domain Multicast
Edit
- The multicast protocols that we have discussed so far are intra-domain protocols.
- If we have group members spread out across domains, then we need inter-domain multicast.
- We will now look at a couple of ideas used for inter-domain multicast.
- One idea is to extend and build on top of the PIM protocol across domains, the other is to extend BGP to support multicasting.
- The former uses a protocol called Multicast…
